The paper industry used to be the main client base of Hotchkiss Engineers, and we are still the preferred supplier of roll manufacturing, roll refurbishment, and rapid response breakdown services in this sector. However, the steady march of technology has resulted in many paper mills closing in the UK. The market in this country is shrinking as other countries such as China continue to increase their market share.
At Hotchkiss Engineers our expertise has grown through many years of working with a broad client base, including Valmet, Kimberley Clarke, Smurfit Kappa and De La Rue. From our founder's invention of the Portable Rotary Lathe to the present day, we constantly meet our customers' individual needs in the paper industry.
One of our most recent projects was for De La Rue in the production of bank notes. We were called on to refurbish and grind their rolls. Having stripped down the complete unit, our engineers then re-bladed it with new breaker bars made from Hardox 400 material. Next, we had to call on the services of a carpenter to re-wood the slots - the wood was then soaked so that it expanded to hold the metal blades in place. Finally, Hotchkiss Engineers then CNC cylindrically ground this beast! - 5m long x 2m diameter x 25 tonnes weight.
